Ceramics Studio, Week One

Ceramic and Sculpture 11 and 12


Studio Arts 11/12 provides opportunities for students to engage in a focused and in-depth study of ceramics and sculpture. Students will develop a knowledge and skilled use of processes and techniques for ceramics and sculpture including additive processes (hand building, assemblage), subtractive processes (carving, sanding, filing), modeling processes (throwing, casting), surface treatment processes (polishing, glazing, staining) and decorative processes (engraving, embossing, fretwork). Image development strategies will be explored as they apply to ceramics and sculpture.  Principles of function, design and aesthetics will be addressed and students will develop a personal style in their work. Basic drawing skills will be studied and applied during the planning and creating process for art projects. 


STUDIO ART CERAMICS & SCULPTURE 11/12  (SAC 101/201)
        Credits:  4
        Prerequisite:  None or previous level art course.

This course will enable students to focus and develop skills in image development, context, and elements and principles of design in the area of Ceramics and Sculpture.  Projects and media may include:  ceramics (clay, glazes, stains), sculpture (wood, soapstone, plastic, cardboard, wire, concrete stepping stones, papier mache, wire, Styrofoam, etc.), recycled objects, and glass work (stained and fused).  Students will learn new techniques and develop skills in handling a range of tools and equipments necessary for create their projects.  Photos of student work may be placed into portfolios.

Pottery wheel work will be on going on a rotational basis
Sample projects:
Day One: Design your lettering for your project planning and sketching folder. Take turns to dig up clay into the bags. Plan your plaques.
Text book: Chapter Two
Project: 11's Design these projects on paper first...include textures and interesting details. Create your name on a plaque that stands up and create a sign for the music you love... that hangs up. 12's - Create a sign with your name on it & create a sign with a message such as "keep calm and carry on"
Project Two: Pinch technique - small planter for a succulent plant or cactus - You may wish to put feet on this project. Put texture and design on your pinch pot. After you have planted your cactus, add small rocks to the top of the soil. Coil technique - make a second planter of the same size using coil technique. ARTISUN: March 2011  (good examples)
Project: Design a tiki lamp and build it from clay using slab technique
Project: Build a skull from clay - personalize it
Project: Build a Middle Eastern Doumbek drum from clay
Project: Create a clay project based on ocean or sea side imagery
Project: Build a character shoe or boot from clay and write a story about the person who wears the shoe
Project: Build a cookie jar from clay - lid and flange
Project: build a mug with a handle - wheel thrown or hand built
Project: carve a walking/talking stick out of poplar. Your imagery should tell a story.
Project: build a dog from paper mache
Project: Design and create a hand built bird feeder ( slab technique)
Project: Design and create a plate that uses a wax resist design and scaffito technique.
Project: Create a tea pot and mug
Project: Create a mask using white clay. When your mask is leather hard use sgraffito to incorporate your zen doodle patterns onto the surface of the mask.

Project: Carve a face in a pumpkin after watching videos on techniques. (subtractive sculpure)
Project: The candy/cookie jar using slab coils and following the how to video but using your own creative ideas for the creature image.
Project: A group installation of little figures carrying messages....after watching a figure making tutorial. This is for an installation to go in the library. It will have a 'safe caring respectful' school message to it.
